Busselton Dunsborough Times report on the reunion
Former foresters reunion
Sept. 4, 2013
L>R: Phil
Shedley, Frank
McKinnell, David
Broadbent
More than 80 people gathered at the Veteran’s Car Club in
Busselton on Friday for the first ever Forestry Department reunion.
The people were mostly from the South West division of the department
before 1986, when it was amalgamated with other departments to eventually
become its current incarnation, the Department of Parks and Wildlife (DPAW).
Current chair of the WA division of the Institute of Foresters of Australia,
John Clarke, said it was wonderful to see so many familiar faces.
“It’s great to catch up with everyone,”
he said.
“But we’re a bit sad the word has fallen out of
use.
“On the old logo were the words production, protection, conservation
and recreation. That logo said it all.”
Former forester and one of the event organisers, Charles Broadbent,
comes from a family of foresters.
Charles’s father Joseph worked in forestry for 10 years,
his brothers Chris and David worked in the field for 40 and 45 years respectively,
and Charles himself has worked in forestry for more than 40 years.
“We’ve had more apologies than attendees
for the reunion, and we hope the next one in two years will be even bigger,”
he said.
The reunion comes ahead of the WA division Institute of Foresters AGM
in Perth this Friday.

(2) FOREST FIELD OFFICER TRAINING
The first formal field officer training courses were at Ludlow Apprentice
School between 1923 and the 1930s depression years and then until World
War II.
The initial Dwellingup Forestry Cadet Scool opened in 1952 (and operated
until 1960 ? with few trainees) according to "50 years of Forestry in West
Australia" but not in the building still in existence. The existing building
opened in 1961. In 1969 the course was modified to include a higher theoretical
content. In 1970 the course was incorporated with the Mt Lawley Technical
College. The cadet course consisted of first year at College and second
year at Dwellingup, with field work in all the main forest types.
From 1979 onwards, first year was at Bunbury Tech.
In 1992, CALM introduced a new policy on recruitment of field staff.
Hence forth staff would be recruited directly from technical colleges and
Universities. Dwellingup Cadet School was closed. In 1995 a new recruit
training program was introduced. The program involved 14 weeks of training,
undertaken in stages over 2 years, in topics such as 4 wheel driving, silviculture,
recreation planning & design, community liaison, fire control, first
aid and fauna management.
There has always been some field officers appointed with qualifications
from other other States or countries, or University degrees not related
to forestry. In earlier years many field officers were experienced foresters
with no formal training.
LUDLOW APPRENTICE SCHOOL
Some information about the first Forestry School in West Australia
is available from http://trove.nla.gov.au, including the above photo, which
shows the students of the Ludlow Forestry School 1923, (L to R) Dick
Perry (without hat), Bill
Ross, Claude
Kinsella, John
Thomson, and George Glover. A tuart tree is in the background. A more
recent
photo is in "50 years of Forestry in West Australia". Perry and
Thomson were known as the "OO's" (double O's), or the "old originals".
Perry and Thomson started as forest apprentices in March 1917 with the
W.A. Forests Dept. Ross, Kinsella and Glover started approximately nine
months later. The school started in June 1921, before the buildings were
completed. The first intake of 9 students included apprentice Boucher from
Greenbushes, apprentice Mander from Wooroloo and Hub
Dawson. The course involved 6 months instruction in year1, 2
months instruction in years 2, 3 and 4, with field work in Forests Department
centres in between. Those that passed were appointed as Forest Guards after
year 4. Subject to satisfactory performance and passing an exam, they were
appointed Assistant Foresters, about 4 years later.
Theodore
Norman Stoate (1895 - 1979) was involved. He commenced training as
a forester at the University of Adelaide in 1912, but his studies were
interrupted by service in World War I, so his first degree was not completed
until 1918. He then joined the Forestry Commission of New South Wales
and from 1919 to 1921 was lecturer-in-charge of the sub-professional forestry
school at Narara. After that school was closed he was loaned to the
Forests Department of Western Australia for 12 months in 1922 to conduct
a forest guard’s school at Ludlow. Stoate was the first OIC of
the school, also the Department's Working Plans Officer at that time, and
later Conservator of Forests.

LUDLOW FOREST TRAINEES 1952- 1956
In February 1952, a new training system was introduced.
The first intake was of 10 trainees, who graduated in 1953.
Jim Raper, Gordon Styles, Brian Baker and Frank
Quicke were among the last group of graduates from the Ludlow Training
School.
In 1955, 20 forest trainees began the last course
at Ludlow, to graduate in 1956. Des
Donnelly has provided some information about the Ludlow and Dwellingup
schools and his career.
DWELLINGUP FORESTRY CADET SCHOOL 1955-
In 1928 a Forest Department office was established
in Dwellingup. In 1952 ? (in time for the 1955 intake), a Forest Trainee
School was opened about 2 miles/5km west of Dwellingup. The school was
housed in 2 Nissen huts for sleeping quarters, 1 hut as a lecture room,
1 as a kitchen and dining room. Ablutions were down near the creek
with cold showers. This school and the district office burnt down in the
1961 Dwellingup fire.
The first intake was in 1955, the trainees
graduated in 1956 and were to be appointed as forest guards in January
1957. The first graduates included Eric
Jenkins, Max
Rutherford, Frank
Vince and Les
Robson. Eric Jenkins began a BSc Forestry degree in 1957 and
graduated from the Australian Forestry School in Canberra in 1960. The
last course at the old school was in 1959, with year 2 at the new school.
1960 graduates were Gerard
Van Didden, Des
Donnelly, John Patterson, Kurt Haunold, Bevan
Forster, David Rowe ? Frank
Podger was school OIC c1956-59.
The new Forestry Cadet School was built in 1959-60 (first used 1960) and used as district headquarters after the fires, until a new district office was built. Each course ran for two years, and was under the control of a forester. John Sclater (c1961-62) was the first, Roger Underwood (1963-65), was the second, followed by Geoff Airey (c1966-67), Ross Gobby (c1968-70), John Skillen (c1970-72), Brian Beer (1970-c1972), Frank Pridham (1972-86), Tony Brandis (c1986-88), Alan Scott (c1988-89), and Alan Byrne (c1988-). Roger Underwood was the first full time training officer.
In 1967, the trainees became known as forest cadets and were appointed under a cadetship. They were located at Dwellingup for 2 years, with 6-8 weeks practical training in both years.
In 1969, there was a major restructure of the course. The course was divided in to 2 separate years. Year 1 was at a Technical College (Mt Lawley) and Year 2 with the Department.
From 1978, the first year of the course was in Bunbury.
The school as such, closed in 1992, but since
1995 the Forest Heritage Centre has maintained the facility for tertiary
training programs and on-the-job training. Below is a photo from Landscope
- Autumn 1999.
JARRAH FOREST LODGE
